Masahiko Kondo Opens First Lead Performance in 34 Years in School Uniform

Singer Masahiko Kondo marked the opening day of his first lead performance in 34 years with “Gingira Gakuen Monogatari” at the Shin-Kabukiza in Osaka on December 14. He also made his directorial debut during his 45-year entertainment career. The comedy show had an audience of 3,000 people laughing in both the matinee and evening performances.

When Kondo appeared in a school uniform, he was met with enthusiastic cheers. The play is set in a school aimed at aspiring idols, with Kondo playing the role of a transfer student. He even shouted his famous catchphrase, “Matchi desu!” as part of his performance. Fellow idols from the 1980s also appeared as 17-year-old high school students, incorporating ad-libs and enjoying their time on stage together.

Most of the audience was over 50 years old, and the theater echoed with laughter.

Kondo expressed, “I want this theater to be a nostalgic space.”

The play was structured in two parts, with a singing segment in the latter half. Kondo and his co-stars performed hit songs such as “Sneaker Blues” and “Gingiragin ni Sarigenaku.”
