Number_i Listed as Performers for NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen, Japan’s Most Famous Music Program; Final Adjustments Underway for Invitation
On October 14, it was revealed that Number_i has been listed as one of the debut performers for the 75th Kohaku Uta Gassen on New Year’s Eve. Kohaku Uta Gassen is Japan’s most famous music program, broadcast live every year on December 31. The production team is in the final stages of negotiations, planning to invite them to perform.
Number_i was formed in October last year by Sho Hirano, Yuta Jinguji, and Yuta Kishi, who left King & Prince in May. The group is managed by TOBE, a company established by Hideaki Takizawa, the former vice president of the old Johnny’s office.
The group made their debut on New Year’s Day this year with the digital single “GOAT,” which garnered significant attention. “GOAT” broke records by reaching 10 million views on YouTube in just three days, the fastest for any debut single by a Japanese male artist. By July, the song had surpassed 100 million streams. Unlike their idol days, their music features authentic hip-hop infused with their signature dance moves, which has become very popular.
Beyond their record-breaking achievements, Number_i has made notable strides. In April, they performed at the Coachella Festival, one of the world’s largest outdoor music festivals held in California, marking their global debut. In June, they held their first concert at Ariake Arena in Tokyo and are currently in the midst of a nationwide tour.
Each year, Kohaku Uta Gassen selects its performers based on three criteria: 1) their achievements that year, 2) public support, and 3) how well they fit the show’s concept and direction. Given the trio’s popularity, they easily meet the first two requirements. Their choice to make their TV debut on NHK’s music program “Venue101” has also worked in their favor. An NHK insider revealed, “This year’s Kohaku director is also the producer of ‘Venue101.’ Their contribution to the station is significant, so their appearance is almost certain.” The insider added, “We are currently discussing what kind of performance would suit them best.”
The trio previously performed at Kohaku Uta Gassen for five consecutive years while with King & Prince. If confirmed, this will mark their return to the New Year’s Eve stage after a two-year hiatus. However, TOBE responded, “We have not received any such request.”
