Shingo Katori Stars in New Fuji TV Drama “JAPAN’S ‘SAITEI’ MAN,” Feels Both Joy and Pressure
Former “SMAP” member and actor Shingo Katori will star in the upcoming January Fuji TV drama series “JAPAN’S ‘SAITEI’ MAN.” He will play a character who is the complete opposite of his usual gentle image, portraying a man who dislikes both his family and children.
The story follows an unsuccessful freelance journalist who is distant from his family and runs for a local council seat. To improve his image for the election, he lives with his brother-in-law and his children as a single father. Initially, this is a strategy to boost his election chances, but over time, genuine trust and relationships develop. Regarding his role, Katori commented, “I’m playing a so-called ‘worst man’ (“SAITEI” MAN), but in reality, Shingo-chan is a very nice person. I want to do my best to become a real ‘worst man’ for the role.”
This will be Katori’s first lead role in a drama series on Fuji TV since 2014. The long-running variety show “SMAP×SMAP,” which featured SMAP for over 20 years, ended in late 2016. After SMAP disbanded, Katori has not appeared much on television. Reflecting on this, Katori said, “After the final recording, I crossed the Rainbow Bridge to go home. (The Rainbow Bridge is near Fuji TV studios.) Since then, I hardly ever cross that bridge to come to Fuji TV…,” he reminisced. “Being away from the TV world for a while has actually helped me understand it better. Now, I’m feeling both the joy of stepping back into such a glamorous world and the pressure that comes with being away for so long,” he revealed.
Filming is scheduled to begin in mid-November. “Recently, there are so many dramas on various networks that it’s hard to choose, but in January next year, please choose Shingo-chan,” he appealed.
